What is Dyslexia/neurodivergence and how can we help?
|
Neurodivergence offers a modern lens for understanding long-recognized learning differences.
In the past, dyslexia was often seen as a disability or a deficiency in brain function. Today, we understand that dyslexia—and many other forms of neurodivergence, including ADHD and autism—are not signs of malfunction, but simply differences in how the brain processes information. As a parent, watching your bright, creative child struggle in school can be heartbreaking. Maybe they’re falling behind in reading despite trying their best. Maybe their confidence is slipping away after too many wrong answers, missed assignments, or misunderstood behaviors. You may have heard phrases like “just try harder” or “they’ll catch up,” while deep down, you know something more is going on.
Dyslexia is more than just letter reversals or reading struggles. It reflects a broader range of thinking and learning traits that can create confusion, especially when traditional teaching methods don’t align with how the individual’s mind works.
Similarly, ADHD and autism are often misunderstood. What can appear as inattention, impulsivity, or emotional outbursts might actually be signs of a mind working in overdrive—taking in more, feeling more, needing a different way to process the world. These kids (and adults) often feel like they’re failing, even when they’re trying their hardest. And parents are left trying to advocate, explain, and reassure without the tools to fully help. There is a better way. It starts with helping individuals understand:
